Help - What can the different types of users do with this software

I have a large customer base, but I don't want to create a user account on the server for every customer. However, I would like each customer to be able to track the progress of their issue. Is this possible?
From what I can gather, the site allows anonymous users. My question is what can these users do and not do? Do the non-anonymous users have to be LDAP users?
