Start/Stop (Run/Shutdown) Redmine

I want to make start/stop Redmine scripts for Debian and FreeBSD and I have question. How can I stop Redmine correctly when it work in background otherwise kill -9?

Just use mongrel_rails command, it's easy to configure and to script --> HowTo_run_Redmine_with_a_Mongrel_cluster
