Clean install for 3.0

Hiya - about once a year or so, I come back to this topic: I'd like to install the latest Redmine from scratch, try it out, and then migrate an active RM production setup to it. I'm familiar with Linux, but not with Ruby. Time for a fresh attempt. Production is running 2.4.3 w/ Ruby 1.9.3 (x86).
New system: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, ARMv7, 2 GB RAM.
I'd like to try out the bleeding edge 3.0-trunk, and a Ruby 2.x w/ a Rails 4.x. A bit ahead of the installation docs, from what I can tell.
What combination would you advise? Should I use RVM? Get Rails from the source? Checkout Redmine trunk?
