OpenLDAP Authentication with MD5 Passwords

Hello,
I was able to authenticate users (with on-the-fly user creation) using plaintext passwords in userPassword.
It didn't work when in userPassword the MD5 Hash is stored in LDAP. Are only plaintext passwords supported by Redmine?
