Associating a commit to an issue in the issue comments

I can associate an issue with a commit if I manage to remember to put the issue number in the commit message. However, there are times when I forget to include the issue number in the commit, and I would like to go into Redmine and associate a particular commit ID with an issue. How can I do this? I tried using 'r####' in the comment text, but that did not work.
Looks like issue #2009 is related to this.
