Email stopped working on redmine once i configure it with Apache + phusion passenger in Sub URI.

My redmine email was working fine when it was configured on http://localhost:3000 and i was running it through webrick.
Now it is configured to apache using phusion passenger and i can access it at
http://myserver/redmine
Since this new configuration my email notifications has stopped working and i am getting following error when trying to send a test email:
An error occurred while sending mail (execution expired)
It is to note that system takes a fair amount of delay before showing error message.
Please help if someone has any idea.
