Sortable Custom Fields

Hello, I created a custom field "sequence" and enabled it as a default column to list on issue tracking page. This field now appears correctly but I cannot sort the column like I can the others. Is there any way to do this or has it been resolved on a newer release (we're still running 8.1)?
