(sometimes) notes left on tickets via email do not spawn email notifications

I'm using redmine 1.2.1 with a gmail account, and I've found that (sometimes) notes left on tickets via email do not spawn email notifications.

I've tried searching the forums and open issues, but found nothing relevant. There is too much noise of people simply trying to get email to work at-large.

I thought that there might be a size-limitation built somewhere into redmine that drops emails that are too long, but have not been able to find any evidence of this.

Does anyone with more experience with the mail-handler have any hints on where I should start looking?
