Redmine

I am evaluating Redmine and I have a issue I can't seem to find a way to resolve. I have created a parent project and two subprojects. I have assigned a user to membership in one of the subprojects but that seems to automatically give the user membership in the parent project. I want to have the user only have memebership in the subproject and not have access to the parent project. How do I do this?
