Adding non-member watchers to get news items (Redmine 2.0.X)

Hi, I know that it has been discussed on how to add non-members to watch Issues, but there doesn't seem to be a way to allow non-members to get a news update from a particular project. Is this correct?
The scenario is that we have a public project for which most users will be accessing as non-members. For these non-members, we would like for them to optionally be notified when a news item is posted. It looks like non-members are allowed to watch specific news items, but since they are not project members they can't watch the entire news tab (by getting updates from their projects).
If this is not possible via the interface, I may be willing to touch the database manually, however I would really like for users to be able to do this for themselves.
