Authentication via REST API

I'm beginner of Redmine Plugin.

I checked Using the REST API with Java (http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/Rest_api_with_java).
The sample uses https site as redmine host.
Is the api access key encrypted when the program requests the host?
