Redmine as an IP docs control, issues tracker, scheduling tool for a non IT company

We are a services company in the Telecom industry, and do not develop software. Still, we want to use Redmine for project management, scheduling, issue tracking, and Intellectual Property document control/revisions.

Are we barking up the wrong tree, or is it reasonable to think we can use Redmine for that?

Can we get Yahoo to host Redmine? We use GoDaddy right now, and find their services/support very limited. Can you recommend a host that would work for us? We don't have a rails website, just want to use Redmine.

Maybe we don't need it hosted, and just use it here on this Redmine site, but somehow that seems incorrect. Please advise.

Telling from the brief description of your requirements, Redmine should be worth a try. At my company Planio we have numerous clients that aren't using it for software development and it comes with issue tracking, project management functionality and document management, so it seems to be a fit. Looking at Subversion or Git may be worthwhile too, for your document versioning/revision control.

That being said, you're right in assuming that Redmine.org is not the right place to host your projects, it is merely used by the community to manage Redmine's own development. You could either look into hosting Redmine yourself at a webhosting provider (look for Ruby on Rails support; support of Ruby is commonly not enough) or on your own server locally (I'd recommend Linux/Unix over Windows).
