change in status results in change of user assignment

We have set up the workflow with 'order' as a tracker. We then have several statuses through which the order passes from 'received' to 'check inventory' to 'ship,' to 'complete', etc. At each step in the workflow, the status changes, as does the person who is to carry out the next step in the workflow.
In essence, with every status change, the issue needs to go the next assigned user automatically based on role, so that the issue will come up automatically in 'issues assigned to me' on the user's personal page. We don't want users having to manually assign the issue to the next user but for the issue to be reassigned to the next user when the previous step in the workflow has been completed.
So far, we have set up roles for carrying out each step in order fulfillment. Each roles is associated with a certain set of statuses.
Thanks for helping out this newbie - any suggestions are welcome - also I am looking for for a programmer if that's what it takes to make it work as above.
