Is there a way to separate "Resolved" status from "Open" or "Closed" items

Redmine OOB on the project summary page shows X open/ Y(total). Is there a way to break this into X open/ Z resolved/ Y (total) either in the core application or via plugin. Essentially, I want the ability to determine what is open, what is closed and any other status grouping for reporting.
Similarly, it would be nice if I can eliminate backlog items from reporting -so, something like an issue category that allows for issue statuses to be grouped and reported on the overview page etc...
