How to manage multiple projects effectively? Any suggestions?

Hi Guys,
I have deployed redmine into my company for more than 1 year now. I am deeply appreciate the great open source community's support for such wonder online project management. Recently, I have encountered several challenges with Redmine and would like to seek other's opinions about it.
In past a year, I have included more 8 projects into the redmine application. And the projects are slowly growing more and more. I need to find a way to keep track available resource left on each coders/engineers. From what i have noticed, each individual coder's schedule are stored within each project, I cannot easily find out how much time are left with him. Neither can I move his schedule on needed basis.
There are many ongoing small tasks which will intersect pre-schedule tasks. I don't see a proper way to insert these tasks or I have to re-schedule all tasks from within each projects.
Is there a smarter way managing your resources, more transparently and adjust all tasks accordingly based on individual's availabilities?
