Redmine

How can I tell the my redmine instance can see my git install? I am using my shared hosting provider and I had to install git in my home directory under bin. My provider is using apache with modrails/Passenger. I have added my bin path to my .bashrc and .bash_profile. I am still thinking that apache might not see the new path. Any suggestions of what to try or additinal debug I can do to see what the real error is?
