Redmine on Bluehost running rails 2.3.10

After several attempts to instal redmine 1.0.3 on Bluehost, I realized they have rails version 2.3.10 running. I keep getting HTTP 500 Internal Server Error.
I am told by Bluehost support that I can install and compile my own rails version. After installing, my rails version still says 2.3.10. Can someone please tell me if they have sucessfully installed the latest redmine version in Bluehost, and if so please let me know.
