Help with "attachments_storage_path" setting

I am sking me if all all attachments (files, folders, wiki sites, issues) will be saved in the folder for setting "attachments_storage_path".
Till 1.2 we used a symlink an now we are unsure if the new param is just an configurable replacement for static destionation folder in former times or if there is a separation between attachments in wiki&issues or files and folders.
