GIT The entry or revision was not found in the repository

I had redmine 2.x running perfectly. However I wanted to use some 3.1 plugins so installed redmine 3.1 next to it with the same configuration.
All is working fine except for the repositories. I am faced with the following error:
The entry or revision was not found in the repository.
In the error log I get:
App 1251 stderr: fatal: Not a git repository: '/home/git/repositories/ChibiOS.git
In settings my repository is:
/home/git/repositories/ChibiOS.git
The redmine server has gitolite running to manage the repositories. The repositories are in the account of the "git" user:
drwxr-x---+ 7 git git 4096 Sep 14 16:39 ChibiOS.git
I guess it is an permission issue somewhere but I don't know where and for what, this used to work fine under 2.x.
Anyone an idea where to look for?
