How to integrate redmine with our own project management system?

Our project management system is developed on rails 4.2.0/Postgres 9.3/ubuntu/nginx. We would like to add support ticket/issue tracking to the project system. Is there a way we can integrate redmine with our project system? We are new to redmine. Is there documentation describing the customization and integration of redmine? Many thanks.
