LDAP Authentication : How to migrate LDAP sAMAccountName to userPrincipalName

Hello,
is it possible to change the LDAP authentication method form using sAMAccountName to userPrincipalName?
Would it be the correct way, to change every single user to use a 2nd LDAP query with the different "Login Attribute" and aadopt the username?
