Redmine users mailinglist

Added by Jan Niggemann (redmine.org team member) about 11 years ago

Hello Dev-Team,

I don't think every user and / or admin is aware of the need to update rails to the latest version, nor do some visit redmine.org regularly.
This led me to thinking that it would be a good idea to have one or more mailing lists:

redmine-announce Information about new releases
redmine-security Infos about security issues
redmine-users Community-Support

Not sure about the last one though, IMHO the forum is sufficient.

What do you think?

Do you mean update Redmine to the latest minor patch version?

JPL writes a news for each release so admin could simply subscribe to the atom feed to get updated.

IMHO we're two few and not enough organized to maintain MLs in addition to dev, issue triage, etc.

Among other things, yes.

JPL writes a news for each release so admin could simply subscribe to the atom feed to get updated.

True, but I still think that mailing-lists are more widely used.

"redmine-announce" should't be much work, if there's a new release I'd just send out the information that's already in the roadmap, like

Redmine 2.1.5 released
The new maintenance release fixes 5 issues and updates translations for Norwegian, Dutch and Russian.
Details can be found at http://www.redmine.org/versions/62
As usual, you can download the new release here: http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/Download

I imagine it as a one-way communication channel for those that neither read redmine.org, aren't subscribed to the atom-feed or just want an additional way to be notified of updates.
I volunteer to do this :-)

Thinkning about it, "redmine-security" would be so low-volume that it could just as well be managed via the "announce" list...

That would be a great idea! I just installed redmine for our chair and was looking for the announce list in the next step :-) I don't read any feeds but have subscribed to announce mailing-lists for all projects that are not packaged via our linux distributor (like bugzilla, drupal etc.).

A mailing-list is definitely the easiest way to make sure you don't miss an important (security) upgrade.

cu,
Frank

Did anything ever happen with this?

No, we didn't put any effort in this because there were hardly any requests... people seem to get along quite well with the feed from the NEWS page.
Plus it would have been quite some work four our small team.

For those that absolutely need email, the net has quite a lot to offer (I don't use any of those myself, please read their Terms of Use):
