Options for using redmine with multiple products and implementation projects

Team,

We have been using redmine for 3+ months in our engineering department, and it's going well. Our implementation group has just joined on board, so we can collaborate all issues in same repository.

I want to get feedback if our setup is on right track:

Engineering department:
  • We have 12 software products, and created 12 projects in redmine to manage this
  • Each product has modules, so we created sub-projects
Implementation Group:
  • They are managing about 60 clients under support contract, so they created 60 projects, 1 per client
  • They also implement software products to new customers, so they created a project for every install
  • All bug issues reported by existing clients, will get created in Client Project, and later reviewed by engineering and moved to proper software product
Questions:
  • I find the list of projects very long, is this ok and we will get used to it?
  • We are at currently 500+ isues, and I'm missing the big picture viw, any ideas how I can still put hard dates on calendar so it does not get lost with all issues in redmine?
  • Anyone else have similur situation like me, if yes, what have you done to make it easy for implemetation group and engineering group to maximize redmine usage

Hi,

When the issues get many of them, custom fields may help. You may create a custom field for all issues of type 'list' with these fields:
  • Engineering department
  • Implementation Group
  • Questions

This list should be obligatory, for all projects, used as filter, and optionally searchable.
Then you may edit the existing issues and assign values for 'Department' field. The new issues will get values when created.
Then you may create custom queries including 'Department' as filter. Also you may use 'Department' as grouping field and so on...

I'm sure there are more possibilities too.

Ivan, thanks for pointers.

We currently added 2 custom fields:
1. Client
2. Work Order (generated by DCL which will be eliminated soon)

I will meet team and see if department field will help.

Any solution for the question:
