Version close - how does it work?

What is exact functionality of closing version?
What I need is find some way, how to NOT display finished (closed) versions in Ticket's versions field, because we're getting very long lists...

Available version statuses are:
  • open: no restriction
  • locked: can not assign new issues to the version
  • closed: can not assign new issues and can not reopen assigned issues

Yes, it should work in this manner, but actually - it doesn't

I'd suggest filing a bug then, and you will need to provide some more information. "It doesn't work" might describe your case, but then I could tell you "works for me on three installations" and be done with it.
