How do Redmine users handle versioning?

I am interested in how other Redmine users handle versioning, what custom fields they require and how they integrate it with their development with Redmine.
For example in FreePascal the version info consists of Version, Major revision, minor revision and build version. Whenever I have an issue, I want to note which version it cropped up in, which one it was resolved, and the one in which it was properly tested.
Do redmine users have some preferred configurations and custom fields they use for this aspect? Are there some documented best practices in this area?
I think I made a hash of mine by using text names as versions without proper numbering.
