Error while setting up E-mail notifications.

Apologize in case of posting to wrong section.
I can’t setup e-mail notifications in Redmine to work with gmail addresses. Trying to test delivery from admin panel, i receive “530 5.7.7 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. b7sm1559835bkb.6”. I found the information that it could happen because of TLS-encryption used by Gmail. Redmine doesn’t support it by default.
There was an advice to install action_mailer_optional_tls and GITHUB to vendor/plugins on the server. I extracted collectiveidea-action_mailer_optional_tls-c05ff01.tar.gz archive to vendor/plugins. As a result, Redmine can’t restart, displaying “/usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/specification.rb:641:in 'expand_path': No such file or directory - getcwd (Errno:EN0ENT) from /usr/local/libsite_ruby/1.8/rubygems/specification.rb:641:in 'installation_path'”. Operation system on server is Linux Debian. What am i doing wrong?
