Can not uncheck "multiple values" on a Custom Field list type.

We have some custom fields defined as the type List.
Someone tried out the "multiple values" feature on some our our existing list fields.
The option to uncheck the multiple values is greyed out.
Is it possible to convert a Multiple value list back to an normal list?
