What is a git identifier?

Hi!
I am using git for more than a year now, even on github, without ever having stumbled about this. I now wanted to connect my Redmine to my git repositories and am requested to put in a git identifier. What is that exactly? Also the documentation about setting up a git repository with Redmine does not seem to mention this identifier field at all?

I believe I can answer it now myself: It is the way Redmine identifies where to look for source files when one has set up more than one repository. Correct?
