Upgrading from v1.0.5 on Ubuntu 10.x to latest

Added by Joe Ratzsch over 9 years ago

Hello all! I just took over management of an old Redmine server (never used the software before). It is running on a 10.x Ubuntu system. What is the best recommended upgrade path from this old of a version?

New Ubuntu server first, or update Redmine on existing server first? Do I have to step up upgrades or can I go right to the latest? Thanks for any help!

Hello Joe,

I suggest you to first upgrade using the upgrade wiki: Redmine Upgrade
Then to migrate to the new server, which is basically a new installation keeping the old database. see the installation wiki.

Cheers,

Thank you for the recommendation, however, it seems that I cannot upgrade to 3.x because Ubuntu 10.x only supports Ruby v1.9 ? Does this sound correct? Is it possible to stand up a new 3.x server on the latest Ubuntu, move over the DB and then run the MySQL DB Upgrade?

Hello Joe,

In the installation wiki Redmine 3.0 is marked as compatible with Ruby 1.9.3 with some exceptions.
If you have Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, supported ended in April 2015.
I'd recommend you to upgrade your Ubuntu to the latest LTS for you to get the latest software.
Alternatively, you can use RVM to help you very easily compile the latest compatible version of Ruby (not an Ubuntu package).
If you use RVM, I'd advise to remove the Ubuntu Ruby package first.

I'd be for moving the instance over to the new server first and do the Redmine upgrade there (no need to run/configure Redmine 1.x, just run the upgrade process directly).

Whatever you do, please backup first :)

Cheers,

Thank you for the reply. Do you mean I can just move the file system over to a new 14.04 Ubuntu server and THEN run perform the upgrade, and the the DB upgrade? My plan was to just install a clean Redmine 3.x on Ubuntu 14.04 and just perform the DB upgrade. The database is all that really matters, correct?

For anyone else looking to migrate/upgrade at the same time, what ended up working for me: Create new Ubuntu 14.04 VM, Setup fresh 2.6 branch Redmine/MySQL/Passenger/Apache, dropped the Redmine DB, imported the old v1.0.5 DB data, ran the DB upgrade and everything worked great.

You need to copy files/ directory, too.
