Proposal: a searchable Plugins & Themes directory for redmine.org — would the team be open to it?
Added by Nick Gorbikoff about 21 hours ago
Hi all,
I've used Redmine daily for close to 15 years across many projects and love it.
The thing that is still difficulat to do is finding/previewing plugns and themse. The information in the Plugins Directory and the Theme List is good, but finding things is hard: few ways to filter or sort, and the themes are one long wiki page.
I'd like to replace both with something easier to browse. Before I start, is the team open to it?
What I'd do¶
- Build it as one Redmine plugin that handles both plugins and themes (separate Plugins and Themes tabs, shared engine). No core changes.
- Open source (GPL-2.0) on GitHub, with a test suite running in CI against supported Redmine versions.
- Include an import of the existing listings, keeping current URLs working - I can create a one time script to convert exisitng themse and plugins into seed file, migration or SQL file.
Features¶
- Search, sorting, and filters: Redmine version, category, author, tags, price, license, screenshots, repo activity. Saved searches.
- A compatibility table per release, plus "works on my version" reports from users.
- Themes shown as a gallery with with screenshot preview.
- "My submissions" page for authors.
- A REST API next to the core Redmine API, e.g. /plugins.json?redmine_version=7.0.
- Uses standard Redmine markup, so it works with any theme.

Moderation¶
Is it needed?
My suggestion: approve only a person's first submission, then let them publish directly. Admins can still edit, relabel (e.g. free vs commercial) or block a listing. More rules can be added later if needed.
Questions¶
- Would you run this on redmine.org after code review?
- What would you need from me to make it happen?
Thanks,
Nick
