Upgrade Redmine from 1.2.1 -> 5.x :)

Hello,
We have redmine at version 1.2.1 on CentOS 5. We are happy with it, but would like to upgrade to the current version on Ubuntu/Debian OS. Is it even possible? I tried to upgrade but ran into problems with Ruby Rails versions. The versions are very old and I couldn't upgrade. Could someone please advise me on how to upgrade to the current version?
