Redmine Logo?

Added by Jim Mulholland almost 16 years ago

Our team was going to create a Redmine Mac OS X Fluid webapp. However, we were not sure what the logo should be to symbolize Redmine on our Mac dock.

Does Redmine have an official logo?

Wow...details. Yes the sub-line looks better now, with the bigger font and right alignment.

+2 for #3. Could you do a version with the larger font for that one as well?

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Jim Mulholland over 15 years ago

Martin, 05 looks great!

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by youngseok yi over 15 years ago

Martin! 05 also looks great!

BTW, Can I ask you what the symbol stands for?
For me, it looks like an enterance of huge and deep tunnel and it reminds me of long expedition.
I might need a torch to go though it^^.

Regarding latest version here: typographically and graphically it's really good! But I still feel that it's not exactly right for project management software... It's perfectly fit to textual meaning of application name, but (for me) it has nothing to do with project management. When I see this logotype and have some weird feeling it will be same kind of dungen controll software, which actually isn't ;)

Frankly, I have idea somewhere deep inside my mind, but I can't get it outside!!! It's pain, I can feel it for weeks but when I draw something, it's not good ;( Heeeelp!

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Maxim Krušina over 15 years ago

PS: I'm still playing with tunnels, portals, gems, rubbys, etc... but overal look is everytime like somethong for miners, not project guys ;)

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Carl Nygard over 15 years ago

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. What does 'Redmine' have to do with project management? Nothing. What does a gecko have to do with SuSE? Nothing. What does a penguin have to do with Linux? Nothing, except that's what the author chose.

If you're looking for something related to project management, I'd suggest whips and chains;) If you're just looking for a cool logo, then we've got plenty of examples of those already...

Either way, your problem is the huge disconnect between any perceived meaning of 'Redmine' and the fact that it is actually project management software (and release management, configuration management, etc.)

If you have some alternative design ideas just load it up here. I'm open for every good idea :)

Otherwise let's get my "bad" suggestion officially integrated. What do you think? Should we talk about "what is right for project management" or if "the tunnel is an exit or entrance"?

For me redmine is the best open source project management solution actually available and it should have a "kickass-looking" identity - equal if this is based on my own or somebody elses idea :)

Hey! Microsoft gave us a cool example of relation between product and its name: Windows. It's the thing to open to throw it throught to get ride of it! \o/

I agree with Martin that a strong identity is very important and as the current styling of redmine is very clean, functional and stylish - a logo could help in finishing the identity. Personally I like the tunnel drafts and prefer number 05 but the "redmine cart" looks also promising while having the ruby...

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Maxim Krušina over 15 years ago

Daniel> IMHO the maim problem is that we need logotype, which symbolize project management, not "which technology was used"! I know it's importatnt for community that this project is build on Ruby on Rails, but this is not important information for regular users. As a corporate identity designer, I will not recommand for my client (Hospital) to have bricks in logotype, better idea is sometnhing connected to medicine etc. The logic is the same: hospital is build from bricks, so let's use bricks as logotype ;) It will not work didn't work...

Revive this! Martin's proposal is excellent and would also look good as a favicon.

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Carsten Schurig over 15 years ago

Yes please revive this! Redmine needs a logo and Martin's work is great. (I would like to see the second style as code as well ;))

I especially love the two colors versions, white on black or white on red are very smart !

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Kai Olav Fredriksen over 15 years ago

Been away from Redmine for half a year. Thought about a logo then, and made some crap suggestions for myself. But now I don't have to think about it anymore :) Martin's logos are very elegant, great work. I like both, and I think that both could be used - depending on setting. The white-on-red lacks som of the subtle qualities of the red-on-white (the colour-grading that is) - but both looks very good.

But... When I look at it - at first glance I liked the very first proposals from Martin even better. The font is tighter - I think that suits it better

I agree

I hate to ask this so late in the game but it's actually something i see as early in the game:

Why "Redmine"? I really must admit i don't like that name at all. I LOVE the app. But the name sounds explosive and destructive and a bit evil. Conjures images of mines, blood, war, nazis, communism, and general destruction for me every time i think about it. Even mining as an activity is dark, scary, dirty, and full of explosions and destruction.

We're working on a theme right now and are planning on hiding the name from our clients all together.

What about rebranding this application all together? We might not even loose the SEO if the new brand is SEO friendly.

My sense is that people should feel the following when they use this system:

  • Secure / Safe
  • Happy / Inspired
  • Organized
  • Calm
  • Confident

The name "Redmine" doesn't hit me for any of those terms. If you look at things like basecamp or other supremely popular systems, they are friendly, and all the other stuff i listed.

I mean, just think of the term basecamp.... A base = foundation. Camp = moving and inspiration of what lies in the next day.

Redmine is also client facing, developer facing, and we're trying to make it also designer facing. Being flexible, it has to work for people who are left brained and right brained alike.

I'm going to move this to a new thread to save confusion...

This is Willies design but a smaller version to use in posting a link to redmine (like the ARISE site does)

What's the official word on the logo? It's been a couple of months now with no end result in sight.

Regarding the logo, I believe, that when it comes to project logos or better yet, software logos, it's all about branding. The logo doesn't have to be descriptive (as in what project/software does), it has to be simple, elegant and recognizable. (what do foxes have to do with web browsing, dolphins with SQL servers, penguins with linux, ... etc, as someone pointed out earlier). And anyone claiming otherwise is ... well not in the knowhow.

With that off my chest, I give Martins proposal a big thumbs up.

I have to second that I like martin's approach. I love the "flexible project management" tagline.

We have a marketing discussion running on this thread: http://www.redmine.org/boards/1/topics/4821

Me three. The logo is nice. I might prefer title-case Helvetica to whatever font is being used there, but that's a minor grumbling.
