Assign keywords to issues?

Added by Joachim N over 13 years ago

I am currently working in a project where we need to group some issues that are related to each other. The "related to issue #"-feature doesn't turn out to be very useful because it's really nasty to always look up the correct issue ID and you can't give a name to the group. Furthermore you can't search for groups established that way and display them in a list. Wouldn't it be really useful to assign keywords to issues? This would be a more flexibel solution than creating a custom field.

Use categories :-)

Joke aside, there is work underway to bring a tagging system to redmine, but I wouldn't count on it in the near future, sorry.

Jeah, actually something that behaves like the categories would be perfect. ^^ I'll wait for it. ;)

Hi Felix,

Would you mind explaining mere users why a feature which has been requested over and over, in several tickets (e.g. http://www.redmine.org/issues/1448) or forum posts is not prioritized?

I read your answer like 'If you want an issue tracking system which supports tagging, you should stop using redmine.'

Am I reading you correctly?

Thanks for yor time and consideration.

Because we are after all only humans dedicating some of our free time to open source software, and there are many (many many many) features that get requested over and over, but at the end of day there only are 24 hours in one day :-)

I read your answer like 'If you want an issue tracking system which supports tagging, you should stop using redmine.'

No. It's being worked on in the person of Eric Davis (edavis10 here and on IRC in freenode.net#redmine), but it won't get in 1.0.0, everything after that is still unclear as there hasn't been any concrete feature planning yet. I also usually tell people to not hold their breath so that no one's disappointed if stuff I say doesn't happen.

Again, this is an open source project worked on in the dev's free time, and we have to make decisions at some point, and what we think is best isn't always what's popular. If you find tagging is an important feature for you, I think edavis10 and/or other people would happily oblige if you make it worth their time.
