Linking to Resources, # ID Numbers

Added by James H almost 10 years ago

I like how redmine allows you to "easily" link to various documents or resources within redmine.

However, I noticed that (besides "Issues") there is not really a way for USERS to see or find out what ID Number the respective document or resource is, in order to link to it (without using the title).

It seems to me that it is somewhat pointless to have this feature of allowing USERS to link to documents and resources in redmine via ID Number when they cannot see ID Numbers for anything besides "Issues"

e.g.

document#17

forum#2

message#1218

(Messages ONLY has this method of linking stated in the text formatting page...)

news#1

project#3

I propose that the ID Numbers be naturally displayed or have an option somehow to display it upon a user event.

Users just have to look at the URL bar of their browser, the IDs are there. Or do you mean something else?

Looks like that's it.
I guess I can't really complain about it not being there then;
but it is still a problem because most of our users would not like (or remember) that and will end up not using this feature (and still complain about not being able to have this feature at the same time).

Issues have their issue ID # clearly visible on the web page but almost nothing else does (besides within the URL), would it be too much to ask to have an option in the settings to display ID # next to the respective entities?

Hmm, well, this might be a good idea, but I'm usure if this wouldn't bother other users that would then ask what these numbers were about...

Per-User preferences with default state of not showing all the ID# could address that issue.

And even if users were to ask about these numbers, this is not really a problem in my eyes because it essentially becomes self-imposed training/learning. If the users care enough to ask, they will be in a better state to remember what, why, and how these numbers can be used.

This is important to me because I feel that the use of the linking features are critical to the overall function/continuity of Redmine.
Without good and plentiful use of these linking features, tracking and finding things would be far more of a hassle and I feel that we could lose user base/interest.
Without these numbers clearly and easily visible to all kinds of users (particularly the non-technical crowd will have a hard time looking in the URL for any kind of meaningful data), users will tend to not use the linking function (It is already "hard" enough as it is for users to refer to the "Text Formatting" references in order to show attachments or for hyperlinks).

Possibly, yes. You're welcome to open a feature request on the tracker.
This would get implemented quickly if you could provide a patch with tests included.
