Ability to demote user ID 1 from administrator role?

Is it possible to remove the administrator role from the user with ID # 1, or is this a specially-privileged uid a la other systems like Drupal?

I've attempted to do this by creating a new user, promoting it to administrator, but the admin box on user 1's edit page is grayed out in a clicked state.

Yes, you can demote the UID 1-user from being an administrator.

You can't demote the account that you are currently logged-in with. Log in with the newly created admin account and you should be able to change the account setting of UID 1.
