Need help upgrading from old installation

Hello!

I got the job to upgrade a couple of years old RedMine 1.0.5 installation to a new server.
The 1.0.5 version is so old that I could not find any upgrading instructions quickly. So my biggest concern is that what are the needed steps to upgrade to newest version?
And would it be wise to upgrade to the newest 1.4.x series or is it possible to upgrade to the 2.x series?

RedMine as a product is pretty unknown to me and I don't know the big differences between 2.x and 1.4 series. How much longer will the 1.4 series be supported?

Redmine 2.0.4 is a last maintenance release for the 2.0.x branch. Redmine 1.4.x will be maintained for security updates until the end of 2012.

If possible, you should go for 2.1.x...

Move to 1.4.x first, then to 2.x.x. take care of plugins. They have different versions before/after 2.0.0.

I guess I have to read my way through changelogs and see if I can just jump over some minor versions...
