clear installation process on ubuntu server 12.04

Added by Giorgio m about 11 years ago

Hi all,

I read tons of guides about installing redmine on ubuntu but all are really confused and unclear. I have a production server and I want to install redmine (2.1 or 2.2) without breaking up all other tools installed. I have on that server zpanel installed and so all the needed packages (except of ruby).

It is possible to have a clear and safe guide on how to install redmine without breaking everything else?

thanks

If you tell us what's unclear in RedmineInstall, we could certainly help you...

Do I understand correctly, you don't have ruby but want to use a ruby on rails application?

What makes you think that installing redmine will "break everything else"?

I think there are some opportunities to improve the installation instructions. In particular, the existing ones seem to expect that some things like mysql, apache, etc. are installed and configured and running, and that the admin understands how to load and launch rails applications.

Ubuntu packages can be installed with a little guesswork, but do not result in a running system. A little extra documentation on what to do once the packages are installed in order to achieve a running redmine service would be welcome. I'd gladly work with someone with the required background to develop this document.

I didn't want to be offensive, I really like your work, I am just saying that documentation and installation guides could be improved.

There are a lot of guides on the internet about setting up mysql and apache. IMHO it is out of scope for redmine.org to explain the setup of at least mysql.

No offense, I didn't take it like that :-)

OK, maybe. But please let me repeat: If you tell us what's unclear in RedmineInstall, we could certainly help you...

Sure I have just added a post in the Help section, I cannot paste the link here, but the topic is called Ruby (Rack) application could not be started.

Could you please help me out?

thanks

Why can't you add a link, do you get an error message? That aside, glad you got it working now, but what you give there is a specific example of an error.

You still don't say where the documentation is unclear and / or imprecise.

RE: clear installation process on ubuntu server 12.04 - Added by Giorgio m about 11 years ago

I don't know, everytime I try to paste a link, I get an error that my message is considered spam and I am logged out from the system...really strange.

Anyway, what is not clear is a linear and easy installation step, step by step. I have followe your RedmineInstall and it is clear and linear, but after installation I don't know how to get redmine working with apache (through passenger) so I had to google and try to find the correct way for my OS.
What I mean is that would be nice and useful a complete step by step howto.

Anyway, I am playing with Redime and I really love it! keep up the good work!

thanks

I see, you mean that the text is missing structure, perhaps something like numbering the steps, things like that?

http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/HowTo_Install_Redmine_in_Ubuntu is not locked, i.e. it's open for edits. Feel free to improve it :-)
