Select nothing on a multi-selection dropdown

On a dropdown field that allows multiple selections, the current value in the database (incorrectly) has one value selected. I want to change it so that no value is selected. I can't seem to find a way of changing the selection to "nothing selected". (my ref = bug 2770)

Press and hold Ctrl button and click with left mouse button on selection.
This should clear selection to nothing.
