unable to send ssl email

I've just installed redmine, and am going through configuration. I've set up email.yml so that I can send a test email successfully from the admin page. However, when I change the port I use in email.yml to the SSL port number, the sending of the email times out.

Also, when I tried using async_smtp, I get a different error : "An error occurred while sending mail (undefined method `perform_delivery_async_smtp' for #)"

I'm using redmine 0.8.4.

Sorry, ignore the second point re smtp_async. I see it's not in 0.8.4.
