Simple to reproduce:
- get your apikey
- log out of redmine
- navigate to [redmine]/groups.xml?key=[yourapikey]
It'll ask for user/pass (and it shouldn't)

Groups.json?key=[apikey] doesn't work either

The Groups API is not available in 1.4.3. It's added in 2.1 (see Rest_api).
