In some workflows it is convenient to update the status of multiple issues at once.
Example: We mark issues as Resolved and the team leader goes through all resolved issues once a week and closes them. Currently the team lead has to manually mark each Resolved issue, instead of skimming through the issue names, marking them and updating all of them as closed.
