Encouraging a community
Added by John Goerzen over 16 years ago
I've been reading some messages lately from people thinking of working on plugins for Redmine, and various other contributions.
The Trac people have a site trac-hacks.org for this sort of thing. But since Trac is a single-project tool, it doesn't work out all that well in some ways.
I thikn it would be great it Redmine were to have such a site. Give each addon project a VCS repo, download area, wiki, bug tracker, all hosted in Redmine. It could even be hosted right here on redmine.org.
Thoughts?

John,
I was just talking about that exact thing to my business partner this weekend. It would be very cool if each plugin could have its own Redmine subproject.
It would definitely make Redmine.org a one-stop shopping place for all things Redmine. I'm not sure what the best way would be to implement from an administrative / security perspective to ensure all sub-projects are legit, though. I would like to avoid a scenario like on Rubyforge where every other project seems to be a ghost town without code.

Don't know if it would work, but it would be great to have a better place for the community. Redmine is good for issue tracking and wiki, but the VCS support is a bit lacking compared to Github or Gitlab. At least for the forum I'd rather like to use Discourse. I see projects, for example Gitea or NixOS moving to Discourse and I think having a nice place for discussions is a boost for a community.

Hi Tobias!

I don't know these projects but I think they already have vital community and an ongoing discussion about the project. That's something Redmine doesn't have at all.
As there wasn't much change on redmine.org for the last years I don't think there will be much in the near future.
But there are some fearless warriors left who come to help at the right point in time. ;-)
There's an unofficial Discord channel for a month now. Currently it has around 75 members and I think it's the best way to get in touch with the community at the moment.
You can find the link in the discussion below:

Kind regards,
Bernhard

I have joined the channel, but I think it's good to have a proper forum-like tool because chats cannot be indexed by search engines and it's hard to find solutions to already solved problems. Gitea, for example, uses Discord and Discourse (great naming ;) at the same time. Chat is great for development stuff, but if I want to explore an open source community, discussions in a public forum have a lower barrier to entry than a closed chat room that I have to create an account for.
The integrated forum in Redmine isn't very encouraging and lacks external authenticators like Github. I have been thinking about creating a Discourse forum for Redmine for a while, but I'm not sure because having too many communication plattforms isn't the best thing.

Well, although in my opinion it would be better to improve Redmine's forum capabilities than moving to another project I can totally see your point. The forum hasn't seen much improvement over the last couple of years. I think the best way to propose this is to raise an issue with the category "Website (redmine.org)" as the forums aren't visited by the project members that often these days. And you have to be patient as Redmine is moving at the speed of an old Turtle with broken legs. :P

The best solution for me would be a Redmine - Discourse integration. I want to do it for my Discourse communities later this year.

I know, I know... I even migrated to Chiliproject and back to Redmine in the old days ;)

Did you ever do anything in that direction (redmine-discourse integration)? I think it would be great if one could simply configure a discourse category URL for each redmine project and then like to that instead of the built-in redmine forum.
