parent's issue search not working...

when I click that icon.. that doesnt work... im using redmine 5.1.1 .. what going on..?

The icon indicates that this is an autocompleted field. You can enter some attribute of the issue you are searching for in the field itself (e.g. the issue id or its subject) and Redmine should show a drop-down list of possibly matching issues.

In any case, you don't need to (and can't) click in the search icon itself to initiate the search.

Slightly pedantic, but possibly good to mention here also is that this drop-down list of possible matches is filtered based on:
  1. the "Allow cross-project subtasks" setting (#14281);
  2. the open/closed status depending on the current subtask status (#24877).
