How to use the REST API?

I'm rather new to Redmine, and it'd be a wonderful help if someone can give me a run-down of how to interact with the REST API provided. Documentation is a bit slim... a HowTo would be fantastic.

See Rest_api, the REST API is only available for Issues and Projects currently, so no documents.
