Check for updates not working in plugins page

Description

When the 'Check for updates' link is clicked in the /admin/plugins page, nothing seems to happen even though updated versions of multiple plugins were available. Worked fine in version 6.1.3 (newer plugin versions were reported correctly), not working in version 7.0.0.
