Adds a List (cascading) custom field format: a list whose options depend on the value(s) selected in a parent list field (e.g. State → City → Health unit).

  • Single or multiple values, drop-down list or check boxes.
  • Multiple parent values: the child offers the options of all selected parent values.
  • Keeps still-valid selections when the parent changes (only values that are no longer allowed are removed).
  • Chains of any depth; cycles are rejected.
  • Hide when there are no options: the field is hidden while the parent selection offers no value, and is not required while hidden.
  • Server-side validation of invalid combinations.
  • Dependencies editor per parent value, with search, "check/uncheck all shown", "only not linked" and a counter of unlinked values.
  • Issue form (including AJAX reloads) and bulk edit.
  • Rake task to migrate from the "List (depending)" format of Redmine Depending Custom Fields.
  • Translated into 10 languages: en, pt-BR, pt, es, fr, it, de, ru, ja, zh.
  • No database migrations, no gems, no external JavaScript libraries.

Works together with Redmine Searchable Custom Fields (search box for long lists).

Installation notes

cd /path/to/redmine/plugins
git clone --branch v0.2.0 https://github.com/cerqueirav/redmine_cascading_custom_fields.git

Restart Redmine. No database migration is needed. To upgrade, replace the plugin folder (or git fetch --tags && git checkout v0.2.0) and restart Redmine.

New: "Hide when there are no options" (optional, per field)

  • The field, label included, is hidden in the issue form while the parent field is empty or while the selected parent values have no linked values.
  • With several parent values selected, the field is shown as soon as one of them has linked values (the options of all of them are offered).
  • A field hidden for lack of options is not required, even if it is marked as required or required by the workflow.
  • In bulk edit, the field is never hidden.
  • Translations of the new option in the 10 languages.

Upgrade: replace the plugin folder and restart Redmine. No database migration.
Tested on Redmine 4.2, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0 and 6.1.
