TL;DR: a To-do page for every Redmine project, where each line is a real ticket.

Sometimes a to-do list is just easier. I needed a flat list: do A, do B, one nested item under B. In Redmine that is three ticket forms and a dozen clicks, and you can't see the list while you build it. Most lines never need a full ticket, and a few do. So each line here is a real ticket, and the full edit is one click away.

What you get:

  • Type a line and press Enter to create a ticket. Tab nests it, and pasting an outline creates one ticket per line.
  • The checkbox closes and reopens tickets. Close a parent and what is below it closes too, after one confirmation.
  • Drag lines to nest or reorder. The order is shared by everyone on the project.
  • Redmine's own filters, tooltip and context menu.
  • A ticket opens in a dialog over the list, with the full edit form.
  • Defaults for new lines (assignee, tracker, status, priority, version, category, dates), set once on the plugin's settings page.
  • Every change is a normal ticket save, so workflow, permissions, journals and mails stay Redmine's. The mails still go out, so your watchers hear about every tick. That's on purpose.

No extra gem. GPL v2 or later. Source and the full README: https://github.com/rubylode/redmine-rubylode-todo

It works with Redmine 7.0 and newer. I tested it on 7.0.2 and the 7.0 stable branch, with Ruby 3.4 and 4.0. Older versions are untested. The code is self-contained, but the front end uses the Stimulus setup that ships with Redmine 7, so I don't expect it to work on older releases without changes.

What's missing: it's built for a desktop browser (the phone experience isn't good), it's English only for now, and there is no undo. Pull Requests are welcome!

Edit a line in place. Enter saves it and opens a new line below, with the keys listed underneath.

Add a line under another with the plus button. Tab nests, Shift+Tab moves it back out.

Hover for Redmine's own ticket tooltip, shown beside the pointer.

Redmine's ticket filters narrow the list.

A ticket opens in a dialog over the list, with the full edit form behind Edit.

Redmine's own context menu on right click.

Defaults for new lines, on the plugin's settings page.

Press ? for the keyboard shortcuts.

Installation notes

Put the plugin in Redmine's plugins folder. The folder must be named redmine_rubylode_todo:

cd /path/to/redmine/plugins
git clone https://github.com/rubylode/redmine-rubylode-todo.git redmine_rubylode_todo

Create the table, then restart Redmine:

cd /path/to/redmine
bundle exec rake redmine:plugins:migrate RAILS_ENV=production

As an administrator, tick "Use the to-do list" for the roles that should see the page (Administration, Roles and permissions). Then enable the To-do module in each project (Settings, Modules). To enable it on every existing project at once:

bundle exec rails runner -e production 'Project.find_each { |project| project.enable_module!(:rubylode_todo) }'

To remove it: run the migration with NAME=redmine_rubylode_todo VERSION=0, delete the folder and restart. Full steps, including Docker, are in the README on GitHub.
